Because we left at intermission for Romeo and Juliet due to crass, utterly unnessasary sexual inuendos, blood squirting into the audence [of course the tweens are going to enjoy those 'lowest common denominator' type scenes that appeal to their animal instincts, but is that really instilling al 'love' for Shakespeare?] and being totally inappropriate for 7th graders, our expectations for Around the World were less than stellar. R&J hardly met up to artistic director Janet Allen’s promise of the ‘highest quality of professional theatre artistry’. However, I must say that as close as we came to never attending the IRT again, you may thank your Around the World crew for keeping us on board for another season! But honestly, how hard is it to connect the dots to figure out what makes a play worthy of consistent standing ovations because it is a play that can be enjoyed by all ages? My guess is it is NOT the high schoolers who are your big financial supporters. Even in that age group there were plenty who commented that they found the second half of R&J boring. On the other hand, what was there NOT to like about Around the World??? Both adults AND kids were exposed to high energy, superb acting, creatively done sets, and a squeaky clean, timeless story. Did the lack of sexual inuendo and potty humor take away from the evening? NO. Was the second half boring? Definitely not! Was this appropriate for ALL ages? Yes! Was this a play the family could discuss for days afterwards and without reservation recommend to others? Yes! We are tentatively looking to return for a couple of the classics next year, but in the back of our minds, unfortunately, lurks the question: ‘How are they going to ruin the Diary of Anne Frank or 39 Steps by deciding they want to come across as ‘cutting edge’, which unfortunatey often translates into ‘what sort of low thing can we get away w/ in this production that’s never been done?’ Here’s hoping our fears are not realized!
I had seen a highly promoted movie production of Around the World in Eighty Days in the 1960′s, remembered it as a rather silly, slap-stick experience, and I was not looking forward to the last IRT play of the season. IRT’s production is far superior to that expensive old production, fast-paced and hilarious, with an inventive set which gives the impression of actually travelling and actors that endeared themselves to the audience and left me wanting more of the hilarity. Bravo.
We have seen several shows at the IRT always a treat. Mike says this was the funniest by far! The props were great and innovative. The acting by La Shawn Banks and Zack Buell should get them some kind of award. Well done!!!!
80 days and the world in a couple of hours! It was fantastic! We were fascinated with the set changes and entertained by the entire performance. Thanks for a terrific end to a wonderful season.
My wife and I were very impressed with this exceptional adaptation of the Verne classic. The cast and limited set and props combined to cause us to drift away into Verne’s imagination for the entire play. Fantastic!
My family and I went to the show wondering with excitement how the IRT was going to fit the whole world on one stage. It was fantastic! The actors made you feel as if you were in India and London and where ever else they traveled! The set was amazing and VERY creative! The humor was fantastic. We laughed until our sides hurt! It was a fantastic show overall!
My mother was in town for Mother’s Day weekend and we saw Around the World in 80 Days. Wow! What an awesome show! I loved it so much I’m rearranging my schedule this week to see it again with some friends. Can’t wait!
This show was fantastic. A must see.
This play is one of the best I have seen. It kept the interest of everyone (aged 8 to adult) in our group. The actors and actress were absolutely brilliant.
After reading the book to my children and seeing the movie, I confess I wasn’t thrilled about seeing this production, but I am so glad that I did. My three teenagers and I absolutely loved it. It was so well acted and so many little touches made it so much more enjoyable than I expected. I highly recommend it to anyone!
i thought it was ok. the jokes were cheesey. but other than that, the actors were great!
“Around the World in 80 Days” was absolutely wonderful! The humor (thanks, Jules), the acting (5 actors cleverly playing all the different parts), scenery, the costumes – INCREDIBLE. Job well done. This was my favorite play of the season.
This play is OUT OF THIS WORLD!! My husband, 12 year old son and I talked about this play for days after seeing it. At one point, our son was laughing so hard he was crying and trying not to snort from laughter! La Shawn Banks as Passepartout is BRILLIANT!!! Zack Buell will keep you in stitches – and should win “hardest working actor of 2010″ after that performance. The staging is outstanding – especially the elephant! Simply put – this show is WONDERFUL and we highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.
Wonderful play never knew what was going to happen next.If ya get a chance go see it.
We thoroughly enjoyed this play. All the actors were great, and they kept us in stitches!
IRT has done it again! “Around the World” was fabulous. My parents were visiting from out of town and we decided to take in the Sunday Matinee. The actors all did a great job, we all really got into the story. I am amazed at the creativity of the set designs and the versatility of the actors playing more than one role. Hilarious moments throughout. It makes me want to read the book! Well done, IRT!
The 4 of us LOVED this play! This and BECKY’S NEW CAR absolutely made us belly-laugh and forget about our stressful lives. Of course we have renewed for next year — we can’t wait to see what’s on the play list.
